Red Nails opens with Valeria a pirate by trade very much away from her natural turf, or rather surf. She has fled deep into a primeval jungle to escape justice after knifing a Stygian officer. Conan has tracked Valeria as well and dispatched the men pursuing her. His lust for her is bound up with his admiration of her, and he has followed her into the jungle both to protect and ultimately possess her.
Conan catches up with Valeria just in time to be stranded on a pinnacle of rock by a slavering dragon with impenetrable scales. With pure Howard style the action, horror, and adventure never ceases. The duo ventures next into a mysterious walled city. The barren fields and broken irrigation canals indicate that the city has been dead a long time. Inside this weird city there are no streets. It is one gigantic indoor complex. Inside this labyrinth lit by glowing gems, Conan and Valeria encounter two factions of people who are engaged in an endless feud.
As with any Conan story, fierce fighting and much killing ensues. Sexually charged, Red Nails delivers a stimulating ride that will leave you satisfied yet ready for more.
Conan makes a compelling hero both for his strength and wit. As a barbarian he has sharper senses and instincts than a man born to soft civilization. He is a man who takes the best from his primeval animal essence and uses it to amplify his life within harsh civilization. Consider this quote from Red Nails: "Conan spoke imperturbably. He was a barbarian, and the terrible patience of the wilderness and its children was as much a part of him as his lusts and rages.
