| Dreibrand Veta - A noble from the Atrophane Empire, he serves as an officer in the imperial Horde and at the start of the story, he has been fighting in wars of expansion for two years. His noble family is currently in disgrace, and Dreibrand fights to win a new fortune. He sees opportunity in the unknown lands to the west of the Empire and journeys there. In the west, he will become embroiled in the rys power struggle.
Dreibrand is a skilled fighter and tactician. He is also talented at learning new languages. His ambition, however, often imperils him as much as the weapons of his enemies.
Miranda When the Atrophane invade her home, Miranda chooses to flee with her children into a dangerous Wilderness where she encounters the rys. She aligns herself with Shan and aids him greatly in his appeals to his allies. Miranda's history as an abused slave sometimes makes it difficult for her to accept the strict patriarchy of the western societies. Having escaped slavery, she will not yield her freedoms or withhold her opinions.
Shan A rys with extraordinary powers, Shan dreams of becoming the King of Jingten. For over four centuries he has bided his time as age weakens the rys Queen Onja. Once he commits himself to challenging her, he raises rebellion among her human subjects in order to weaken her further. War and killing grate against Shan's nature, but he knows that Onja cannot be overthrown without violence.
Queen Onja - As the Queen of the rys, she is the most powerful of her kind, and the oldest. For over twenty-two centuries, Onja has ruled the rys and the human kingdoms of the west. She demands tribute every year from the humans and she expects them to worship her as a Goddess. Onja tolerates no other religions.
She became Queen in an ancient war when she and the rys wiped out another kingdom of rys. She still keeps the souls of the defeated warriors as her wraith slaves.
Quylan A young female rys with emerging powers, Quylan is selected by Onja to be her protege in order to assist her in the war with Shan. Quylan is the daughter of Onja's Captain of the Guard and has been raised to be loyal to the Queen, but Onja's evil is difficult for Quylan to ignore and she is conflicted about her role in the war.
Faychan - A member of the notorious criminal society, the Kezanada, Faychan holds the high rank of Masterspy. His brotherhood has served Onja through the ages, but as the threat from Shan becomes more serious, Faychan plots to protect his interests no matter who wins.
Kwan Chenomet - The Hordemaster of the Atrophane military, Kwan acts as a mentor to Dreibrand. Although already famous, wealthy, and powerful, Kwan seeks even greater glory in the west, but his experiences with Queen Onja test him in ways he is not accustomed.
King Taischek - The King of the Temu Tribe, Taischek has been totally loyal to Shan since the rys saved him from being burned at the stake as a boy. He is a hard drinker, a fierce warrior, and an ardent opponent of Onja. He makes war on his rival tribe, the Sabuto, every year because he hates them and he likes to get away from his nine wives.
General Xander - As the general of the Temu Army, Xander is a close friend to King Taischek. Xander is an able fighter albeit a conservative strategist. His greatest talent is that he is a skilled surgeon. Among his failings are his inability to keep up in drinking with his king and his secret desire for Miranda.
Tytido of Clan Gozmochi - A warrior from the Hirqua Tribe, Tytido volunteers to serve Shan in the war. Tytido is a friend to Dreibrand.
Prince Kalek - The heir to the Temu Tribe, Kalek is the last surviving son of King Taischek's first wife. Kalek is eager to prove himself as a warrior in the war with Onja. He is an unruly son and hostile to his father's foreign allies.
Redan - A master archer from the Zenglawa Tribe, Redan chooses to leave his tribe that has stayed loyal to Onja and instead serve Shan.
Atarek Veta - Older brother of Dreibrand. He has led a life lacking in virtue as he sops up the last of the Veta family fortune. Believing that his brother is dead fighting on the imperial frontier, he quickens the pace of his debauchery until learning that Dreibrand might be alive. Filled with new purpose Atarek leaves his beloved homeland of Atrophane in search of his brother.
