"He looked at the mountains, and saw the sun above their ridges, and the shadow coming from their feet. And there close behind him was the morning he could never go back to. He could see it clearly; his thoughts reached out like arms to touch it once more, and be in it again. The night that was coming he could not see, and his eyes and his thoughts shrank from it. He had given his enemy until sundown. He could not trace the path which had led him to this. He remembered their first meeting--five years back, in Medicine Bow, and the words which at once began his hate. No, it was before any words; it was the encounter of their eyes. The Virginian by Owen Wister is an engrossing character study that truly helps you comprehend and feel the people and spirit of the Old West. Mysterious yet stunningly real for the reader, Wister's Virginian is considered the first fully blown literary cowboy hero instead of a cheap stereotype. The railroads have penetrated the lands and the Indians are conquered but civilization is just emerging. The wild frontier where young men live free of the burdens and bothers of nicer society is gradually giving way to proper communities composed of families. A land owning class is establishing authority, and the vibrancy and diversity of the environment is delivered by Wister in chapters filled with unique characters and telling details. As the reader, you will feel the bumpy rides in each stagecoach and hear the rattle of rattlesnakes in the brush. The tension over a contentious poker game in a smoky room of ranch hands will stretch your nerves, and the slowly developing love of a lonely cowboy for a young school teacher will fill your heart.
The Virginian also illustrates fascinating differences between the Eastern and
