"…There is a place

(If ancient and prophetic fame in Heaven

Err not)--another World, the happy seat

Of some new race, called Man, about this time

To be created like to us, though less

In power and excellence, but favoured more

Of him who rules above; so was his will

Pronounced among the Gods, and by an oath

That shook Heaven’s whole circumference confirmed.

Thither let us bend all our thoughts, to learn

What creatures there inhabit, of what mould

Or substance, how endued, and what their power

And where their weakness: how attempted best,

By force of subtlety. Though Heaven be shut,

And Heaven’s high Arbitrator sit secure

In his own strength, this place may lie exposed,

The utmost border of his kingdom, left

To their defence who hold it: here, perhaps,

Some advantageous act may be achieved

By sudden onset--either with Hell-fire

To waste his whole creation, or possess

All as our own, and drive, as we were driven,

The puny habitants; or, if not drive,

Seduce them to our party, that their God

May prove their foe, and with repenting hand

Abolish his own works." -- from Paradise Lost

Such is the vindictive plan adopted by Satan as written by John Milton in his epic masterpiece Paradise Lost, first published in 1667. In a story that includes the other angels, and Adam and Eve, Milton develops in Satan what is considered the first English language version of the anti-hero. Because he is the vile Fiend who opposes God, Satan is certainly not likeable, but you will still hang on his every word and grin at his sharp criticisms of the All Mighty Creator.

Drawing upon both Classical and Judeo-Christian mythology, Milton created in Paradise Lost a stunning portrayal of humanity's fall from bliss and expulsion from the Garden of Eden. The Bible's Book of Genesis has nothing compared to this brilliantly told story that brings the angels and Adam and Eve to life in compelling and relatable ways. Amid fierce action and snapping dialogue, the great themes of free will and obedience to the highest powers of creation are examined. To obey God and remain in the glowing bliss of God's kingdom make sense, but with beings possessing free will (both the angels and Adam and Eve) temptation is ever a Siren song. Satan is tempted by the notion that he could overthrow God and seize control of Heaven, and Eve is tempted to pick from the forbidden Tree of Knowledge. The first foul dream sent to her by Satan makes her aware of her innocence and she is deeply bothered by it and seeks again purity through obedience to God, but even awareness of her innocence leaves her open to further temptation for Knowledge.

While grappling with great issues of spirituality, Paradise Lost is also remarkable for its entertainment value. Although written in the archaic language of its time, the scenes and action of the epic poem will be exciting to the modern reader. Great clashes between the hosts of Heaven and Satan, compelling conversations between Adam and Even, grotesque beasts of Hell, gripping arguments between angels and Satan, and astounding descriptions of the mythological zones of Heaven, Hell, and the Garden of Eden all combine to form an amazing fantasy that any lover of that genre can surely appreciate.

For an intellectual yet exciting read, Paradise Lost delivers deluxe quality. You will not be disappointed by its powerful narrative told with obvious passion.
