First published in 1726 initially anonymously, the relentless satire of Jonathan Swift remains strikingly familiar even three centuries later. Through Gulliver's accounts of his travels among various fantasy societies, including the tiny Lilliputians and the giant people of Brobdingnag, all the merits and flaws of humanity are exposed. And the author also craftily derides many aspects of his own society by often disapproving of the ignorant ways of his hosts. Gulliver has a memorable exchange with the ruler of the giants when he extols the wonders of gunpowder and the destruction that weapons designed around it are capable of causing on both buildings and flesh. Gulliver offers to teach the giants of Brobdingnag how to make gunpowder, but the ruler is appalled. He declares that he would never use such weapons and that Gulliver is never to bring up the subject again. Gulliver snidely considers the ruler to be narrow-minded for dismissing such excellent weaponry.
The story takes place over a sixteen year period in which Gulliver engages on four journeys by sea. He usually ends up in surreal locations through shipwreck, pirate attack, and other misfortunes. Between each journey he returns to
