Message from the author of Get Dicey: Play Craps and Have Fun
Tracy Michigan is not my real name, but I did want to be Indiana Jones when I was kid. The pen name Tracy Michigan is based on what my name badge said when I was a craps dealer in Las Vegas. If you’ve ever been to casino resorts, you may have noticed that staff members are often labeled by their first names and homelands. So, being from Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, my name badge read Tracy Michigan, which seemed to be a natural identity to place on Get Dicey. Another reason for using a pen name was that a dealer would never give her first and last name out to a casino visitor, so a little part of me clung to that wisdom that kept stalkers from looking me up.
As for my experience with craps, I worked for two years in Las Vegas, Nevada exclusively as a craps dealer. I would sometimes play as well. My biggest win was $1,200 off a $50 buy in. It was majestic. The pass line was so hot. I was betting black by the time the seven out came. Gambling is fun, but playing black is really fun.
Being a dealer gave me the opportunity to watch many people play in different ways and at different amounts of money. One of the cool things about craps is that every player you are dealing to can be winning on the same numbers but be playing in slightly different ways. I have seen way more action than the average or even above-average John Q. Bettor could afford.
My observations of many well-schooled players indicate that they have in common a willingness to press bets when the dice are rolling their way. I have watched countless first-time players unwittingly squander miracle rolls because they continue to make the same minimum bets and collect only small payoffs roll after roll. Knowing the rules of the game and knowing what your options are make all the difference if you are lucky enough to be at a hot game.
Thank you.
